Laser Engraving vs UV Printing on YETI® Drinkware

Laser engraving and UV printing can both be used to personalise drinkware, but they create very different results.

Laser engraving permanently marks the surface of the product. UV printing applies specially cured ink onto the exterior. The better option depends on whether you prioritise permanent durability, colour reproduction or a particular visual style.

ETCH specialises in custom YETI® laser engraving.

What Is Laser Engraving?

Laser engraving uses a focused laser to remove or mark part of the external surface.

On a colour-coated YETI®, the laser removes the coating and exposes the stainless steel underneath. This produces a clean design that contrasts with the product colour.

On stainless steel finishes, laser marking generally produces a dark grey or black appearance.

Because the design is physically marked into the surface, it does not rely on ink, vinyl or adhesive.

What Is UV Printing?

UV printing places ink onto the product surface and uses ultraviolet light to cure it.

This method can reproduce:

  • Full-colour logos
  • Gradients
  • Multiple brand colours
  • Colour photographs
  • Detailed illustrations
  • Bright promotional designs

Unlike engraving, the printed design remains a surface-applied layer.

Laser Engraving vs UV Printing

Feature Laser engraving UV printing
Finish Exposed or marked surface Coloured ink applied to surface
Colour Generally stainless, grey or black Full colour available
Durability Permanent surface mark Depends on ink, preparation and use
Peeling Will not peel like a sticker Surface layer may wear over time
Best for Names, logos, line art and text Full-colour artwork and gradients
Appearance Clean, understated and premium Bold, colourful and promotional
Artwork Strong contrast and defined lines Colour artwork can be reproduced
Everyday use Excellent for frequently used products Depends on print quality and care

Which Method Is More Durable?

Laser engraving is generally the better option when permanent personalisation is the priority.

The design is created by marking the product surface rather than adding a separate printed layer. During normal use, the engraving will not peel away or wash off.

This makes it suitable for:

  • Work bottles
  • Construction crews
  • Mining teams
  • Outdoor use
  • Camping
  • Fishing
  • Everyday drinkware
  • Employee gifts
  • Frequently handled products

UV printing can still provide a strong result when completed correctly, but its durability depends on surface preparation, ink quality, curing and how the product is used.

Which Method Looks Better?

This depends on the design.

Laser engraving produces a clean, premium and understated result. It works especially well with:

  • Business logos
  • Names
  • Monograms
  • Line drawings
  • Quotes
  • Dates
  • Bold illustrations
  • Memorial designs

UV printing may be more suitable when the design depends on:

  • Exact brand colours
  • Full-colour photographs
  • Gradients
  • Multiple bright colours
  • Colour-coded details

A colourful design may need to be converted into a single-colour engraving format before laser production.

Can a Colour Logo Be Laser Engraved?

A colour logo can usually be adapted for engraving, but the colours will not remain.

The logo is converted into an engraving-ready design based on shape, contrast and negative space.

For example, a blue, red and yellow logo may be transformed into a clean single-colour design. The engraved result will display the exposed or marked material rather than blue, red and yellow.

ETCH reviews uploaded logos before engraving and may remove backgrounds, improve contrast or adjust small details.

Is Engraving Better for Corporate Gifts?

Laser engraving is often a strong choice for corporate gifts because it creates a professional finish without making the product look like disposable promotional merchandise.

Businesses can add:

  • Company logos
  • Employee names
  • Project names
  • Safety milestones
  • Completion dates
  • Client messages
  • Event branding

Which Method Should You Choose?

Choose laser engraving when you want:

  • Permanent personalisation
  • A premium finish
  • No surface sticker
  • Names or logos
  • Frequent everyday use
  • A design that will not wash off
  • Single-sided or double-sided options

Consider UV printing when exact colour reproduction is essential to the design.

For most names, business logos, gifts and everyday personalised drinkware, laser engraving provides a clean and durable result.
