Can You Engrave a Photo on a YETI®?
Yes, suitable photographs can be permanently laser engraved onto many YETI® bottles, tumblers, mugs and Colster® can coolers.
Photo engraving can transform a favourite image into a meaningful personalised gift featuring a family member, pet, vehicle, house, wedding, holiday or memorable moment.
However, the quality of the finished engraving depends on the photograph supplied. Clear lighting, sharp focus and a prominent subject will normally produce a stronger result than a dark, blurry or distant image.
How Does Photo Engraving Work?
A laser does not reproduce a photograph in full colour.
The image is converted into specially prepared black-and-white engraving artwork. Different shades and details may be represented using contrast, patterns and carefully controlled engraving density.
Artwork preparation can include:
- Removing the background
- Increasing contrast
- Brightening important areas
- Reducing heavy shadows
- Sharpening the subject
- Simplifying unnecessary detail
- Converting the image into an engraving pattern
- Resizing and positioning the design
The result has a distinctive engraved appearance rather than looking like a printed colour photograph.
What Photos Work Best?
The best photographs normally have:
- One clearly visible subject
- Sharp focus
- Good natural lighting
- Strong separation from the background
- Visible facial or surface details
- High image resolution
- Limited motion blur
- Minimal heavy shadow
- A subject that fills a large part of the image
Always upload the original photograph where possible.
Screenshots from Facebook, Instagram or text messages are often compressed and may contain less detail than the original camera file.
Photos of People
For a portrait engraving, choose a photograph where the person is close to the camera and their facial features are clearly visible.
Look for an image where:
- The eyes and face are in focus
- The face is not hidden by shadow
- Hair is separated from the background
- The subject is not too far away
- The image is not heavily filtered
- The photograph has not been cropped too tightly
- Important features are not covered
A close-up portrait will usually retain more detail than a full-body photograph taken from a distance.
Pet Photo Engraving
Pet portraits are popular for birthdays, memorial gifts and everyday personalised drinkware.
Choose an image where:
- The pet’s face and eyes are visible
- The ears are not cut off
- The fur does not blend into the background
- The image is sharp and well lit
- The pet fills most of the frame
Dark-coloured pets can still produce excellent engravings, but additional preparation may be needed to make the eyes, nose and fur detail visible.
Vehicle and Machinery Engraving
Cars, trucks, boats, tractors, caravans and earthmoving equipment can also be prepared for engraving.
A side or three-quarter view often provides a recognisable shape and allows important details to remain visible.
Avoid photographs where:
- The vehicle is very far away
- Trees or objects cover the subject
- Reflections hide important details
- The background is extremely busy
- The image is blurry
- The vehicle occupies only a small part of the photo
Small number plates, signage and decals may need to be simplified or enlarged.
Can the Background Be Removed?
Yes. Removing the background can make the subject clearer and prevent unnecessary scenery from overwhelming the design.
Background removal is particularly useful for:
- Portraits
- Pets
- Vehicles
- Boats
- Houses
- Machinery
- Wedding photos
- Memorial designs
Sometimes a small part of the background can be retained when it adds meaning to the image, but simpler designs often produce a cleaner engraving.
Can You Engrave More Than One Person?
Yes, but each person becomes smaller as more subjects are added.
A photo of one or two people will normally allow more visible facial detail than a large group photograph.
For a group image, choose:
- A larger YETI® product
- A photograph taken close to the group
- Clear, even lighting
- A simple background
- A wider engraving layout where available
Can Text Be Added to the Photo?
Yes. A photograph can be combined with:
- A person’s name
- A pet’s name
- Birth or memorial dates
- A wedding date
- A short quote
- A family name
- Coordinates
- A brief personal message
Keep additional wording short so the design does not become crowded.
Where available, double-sided engraving can be used to place the photograph on one side and a longer message on the other.
Which YETI® Products Suit Photo Engraving?
Products with larger, uninterrupted surfaces can provide more room for photo detail.
Popular options include:
A larger bottle may suit portraits, pets or vehicles, while smaller products are often better for a simple image, name or outline design.
Photos to Avoid
Try not to use:
- Social media screenshots
- Small downloaded thumbnails
- Blurry photographs
- Images taken in extremely low light
- Heavily filtered photos
- Subjects hidden behind objects
- Photographs copied from another screen
- Images where the subject is very small
- Artwork you do not have permission to reproduce
